A perfect Vienna summer day doesn't start with an alarm clock, it starts with the light. Once it's coming through the windows and the day still feels wide open, it's time to head out.
Morning: Le Pic or Café Schwarzenberg
The best start to the day is at Le Pic on Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platz: French brasserie culture, bread baked fresh in their own boulangerie, croissants, éclairs, good coffee.
Anyone after something more Viennese heads to Café Schwarzenberg on Kärntner Ring, open since 1861, newspapers from around the world, melange, strudel. Both are the right call.
Late Morning: Naschmarkt or Karmelitermarkt
Naschmarkt in late morning, once the first rush has passed and the vendors have time to talk. Middle Eastern spices, fresh fish, cheese from around the world, local farmers on Fridays and Saturdays.
For a more neighborhood feel: Karmelitermarkt in the second district on Saturday morning, when the farmers market is running. Follow it with a stop at Le petit Bazar for Breton galettes, French delicacies, and a glass overlooking the square.
Lunch: Nirvana, Shanghai Tan, or Napolino
There are plenty of right answers for lunch: Nirvana on Rotenturmstraße for Indian cooking that's rarely this precise in Vienna. Shanghai Tan on Gumpendorfer Straße for hand pulled bang bang noodles and sushi with real depth. Or simply a pizza at Napolino next to the State Opera.
Afternoon: Glacis Beisl or Gelato Carlo
Glacis Beisl in the Museumsquartier for a long afternoon coffee in the garden, a green oasis in the middle of the city. Or ice cream: Gelato Carlo on Hamerlingplatz, where the owner makes gelato, not ice cream. Or Tichy on Reumannplatz for the legendary apricot ice cream dumplings.
Early Evening: Aperitivo at Alexandra Bar or Pastamara
Just before six, when the heat lets up and the city exhales: aperitivo time. Alexandra Bar on Seilergasse for signature cocktails and Italian bites. Pastamara at the Ritz-Carlton for the Ritz Spritz and arancini. Or Bar Louu on Zieglergasse for natural wine and a ham and cheese toast.
Evening and Midnight
There's no wrong choice for the evening, only a personal one. O boufés on Dominikanerbastei for natural wine and Konstantin Filippou's precise cooking. DAST on Lacknergasse for Austrian tapas and wine from their in house wine shop. Wildling on Laudongasse for seasonal compositions in a vaulted cellar.
Anyone not ready to head home yet can go to Skopik & Lohn on Leopoldsgasse: white clothed tables out on the sidewalk, dim light, one last glass. Or King's Bar on Ruprechtsplatz, if the evening is meant to turn into a night.
