Vienna has become a genuine pizza city over the past few years. Neapolitan tradition meets Austrian craft, sourdough meets organic certification, and a growing number of places now take the dough just as seriously as the toppings.
Neapolitan Tradition: l'Autentico and Napolino
The purest expression of Neapolitan pizza culture is l'Autentico on Grinzinger Allee 30 in the 19th district. André and Sandro Gargiulo brought authentic Neapolitan technique to Vienna: from the classic margherita to an elegant bianca, from a tartufata with smoked scamorza and truffle to build your own add ons.
Same family, different concept: Napolino on Hanuschgasse, right next to the State Opera and the Albertina, is the urban offshoot, street food friendly, fast, and still handmade. The pizza portafoglio gets folded up and eaten on the go.
With Character: Cocore, Viva la Mamma, and Pizza Randale
On Bräunerstraße 4-6, Cocore has a signature you notice immediately: colored dough. The Pinna Gialla comes with turmeric dough, tuna, and Tropea onions.
At Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platz 5, Viva la Mamma has a warmth you can feel. The pizza dough rests for 72 hours, and the pasta is made fresh by hand every day.
In the fifth district, Pizza Randale on Kettenbrückengasse 1 does exactly what it wants, and does it with conviction. Neapolitan base, but no classic toppings: figs with rosemary honey, apple with blood sausage. At night the place turns into a bar with a club atmosphere.
Organic and Experimental: Vero and Pizzeria Wolke
For serious organic pizza, Bio Pizzeria Vero on Währinger Gürtel 162 is the place. Neapolitan sourdough, exclusively organic ingredients, gluten free buckwheat pizza, house made vegan cheese.
In the seventh district, Via Toledo on Laudongasse 13 stands for Neapolitan pizza with an enopizzeria's attention to wine. And Pizzeria Wolke on Neubaugasse 34 rethinks the toppings entirely: purple potato cream, beet based sauces, vegan toppings. Half the menu is vegan, and none of it feels like a compromise.
More Addresses in the Second and Seventeenth Districts
In the second district, two addresses stand out: Pizza Mari on Leopoldsgasse 23a and Preferita on Franz-Hochedlinger-Gasse 7, both with a real craft focus.
And for anyone looking in the 17th district: Pizzeria 450 Gradi on Kalvarienberggasse 43. The name says it all. 450 degrees, a short bake, a puffy crust. Exactly how it should be.
From classic Neapolitan to organic certified to experimental toppings, Vienna's pizza scene has diversified enormously over the past few years.
