Anyone who really wants to understand a Viennese summer should get out of town. Not far, just a few kilometers, but away from the city bustle, up into the vineyards, where the air tastes different and time slows down. The Heuriger isn't nostalgia. It's one of the city's most alive institutions.
Wieninger am Nussberg: the finest view
The finest view belongs to Wieninger am Nussberg at Eichelhofweg 125 in the 19th district. High above the city, on the so-called Meeresterrasse, the view opens out over Vienna all the way to the Danube. Biodynamic wines from the Wieninger and Hajszan Neumann estates, cold tavern-style snacks from local producers. Open Thursday to Sunday from April: a place that feels like a promise.
Grinzing and Döbling: tradition with history
The most tradition-steeped house is Mayer am Pfarrplatz in Döbling: Viennese wine has been made here since 1683, and the tavern itself has become synonymous with Vienna's Heuriger culture. Heritage-protected parlors, its own wines, a history you feel without needing it explained.
Also in Grinzing, on Cobenzlgasse 34, is Zum Martin Sepp, one of the best-known Heurigen in the 19th district, family-run, with the character of a place that hasn't changed because it sees no reason to.
For something a little more tucked away, Alter Bach-Hengl on Sandgasse 7 has one of the most charming garden settings in the city. The bright yellow facade, the green door, the ivy-wrapped terrace: in the evening, small lanterns hang beneath the canopy of vines.
Cobenzl, Stammersdorf and Bisamberg
For wine lovers with high standards: Weingut Wien Cobenzl at Cobenzl 96 has been owned by the City of Vienna for more than 110 years and is certified sustainable and organic. The best Viennese grape varieties, gentle cellar techniques, tastings and tours by appointment.
In the 21st district, in Stammersdorf, is Ausblick.Wien, the Dr. Höfler winery on Untere Jungenberggasse 144. A sunny terrace, panoramic views over Vienna, wine grown on the estate's own Bisamberg slopes and regularly awarded gold and silver medals, plus game specialties from the owner's own hunting grounds.
Urban and uncomplicated: 10er Marie and Alte Weinpresse
For anyone who prefers Ottakring to the Döbling hillsides: 10er Marie on Ottakringerstraße 222 is a Heuriger with real neighborhood soul, without the usual tourist trappings.
A bit more urban but still with genuine Heuriger character: Heurige zur alten Weinpresse on Landstraßer Hauptstraße 126 in the third district. For anyone who doesn't want to travel all the way to the 19th district, this is a reliable Heuriger right in the middle of town.
In summer, the Heuriger does what it has always done: it's a place you arrive at and only leave much later than planned. A glass that keeps getting refilled. An evening that runs longer than intended.
